Madeira Flower Festival with Villa Amore

The Flower Festival is a tribute to spring, at a time of the year when flowers bloom and Madeira Island gains even more color.

In historical terms, Madeira Island is and has always been an important port of call on the routes between Europe and the African and American continents, and when they arrived, tourists and travelers found flower sellers, which contributed to the affectionate nickname.

The origins of the Flower Festival can be traced back to the “Baile da Rosa”, a party organized for the first time in 1954 by the Ateneu Comercial do Funchal. This party was characterized by a dance that marked the beginning of spring and included an exhibition-competition of flowers.

It was in 1979 that the first Flower Festival was held, a way found to enhance the value of the flower as a factor in promoting tourism. This became a beautiful outdoor event, where the creative manifestations of the Madeiran people are highlighted.

The Flower Festival’s allegoric parade is considered the great moment of this celebration that highlights the natural beauty of the island, which is represented in different ways, and we can consider that it is certainly a treat for the spectators who follow this show where the Flower is the main character.

The parade has hundreds of extras and floats, decorated to perfection and takes place during the Sunday afternoon along Avenida do Mar and Avenida Sá Carneiro, in the city of Funchal. In this amazing show we can appreciate the most varied species that bloom every year on the island of Madeira.

This year it will take place on the 5th, 6th and 7th of May, but the celebrations will be extended until the end of May. With that said, all you need to do now to is book your stay at Villa Amore accommodation so we can make sure you have nothing missing to be happy in these days!
