The arrival of the New Year is one of the most impressive events in Madeira. Therefore, the Island its gearing up to welcome all its visitors for the 2023 festive season.
It all starts on the 1st of December when the Christmas lights are turned on in the city of Funchal, making it a place worthy of a Christmas movie. During a month of festivities, it comes the most awaited night of the year, 31st of December.
The last day of the year begins with the arrival of many cruise ships to the bay of Funchal. Streets, houses, hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs get ready for the New Year’s Eve. At midnight, we celebrate the arrival of a new year with the incredible fireworks show, officially recognized as the largest in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records in 2006. The stage is set for an unforgettable show that starts with the cruise ships whistle and New Years wishes fill the air. The skies light up with fireworks that lasts about eight minutes and the Funchal’s natural amphitheatre is transformed into a spectacular scene illuminated with thousands coloured lights.

“Pico dos Barcelos” Viewpoint
Located at 355 meters above sea level and at the west end of the city of Funchal, you can imagine the superb view over the city that this viewpoint offers. Here you will be able to see most of the fire stations and bring your own champagne to celebrate.
“Neves” Viewpoint
Located in the opposite side of the previous one, this viewpoint is located on the east of the city and has a privileged view over the bay of Funchal where, that night, there are a dozen cruise ships and huge boats scattered on the sea in front of Funchal.
Placa Central and Avenida do Mar
For those who love to party, our suggestion is to spend New Year’s Eve in the heart of the city of Funchal. With a lot of music and entertainment shows, Funchal dresses up to welcome the new year.
