Of volcanic origin 60 million years ago, Madeira Island is located in southern Europe and West Africa, hence its mild temperatures throughout the year. Geographically it is closer to Africa, but belongs to Portugal. We can say that here we find the best of both worlds.
Discovered by three portuguese navigators in 1419, the name Madeira Island comes from the Portuguese word “madeira” which means “wood” due to the abundance of this raw material when they disembark here. Despite belonging to Portugal, it has its own autonomous government.
The highest point is Pico Ruivo with 1862 meters of altitude and the lowest is not, but could be, the Villa Amore, because we are located by the sea (15 meters of altitude).
Nobody can understand why, but the only way to travel to Madeira is by plane, despite the fact that, in other times, there was a ferry. Not that this is a concern, because we are only 1h30 by plane from mainland Portugal and by ferry it would take 24h.
Madeira is an archipelago made up of several islands, including the Desertas Islands and Selvagens Islands (uninhabited islands), Madeira Island and the Porto Santo Island (inhabited islands). Porto Santo stands out for its 9km of yellow sand beach and you can take a ferry to travel between these islands.
It is probably questioned why there are so many tunnels in Madeira Island, but the truth is that without them it would take more than 3 hours to reach Funchal from Villa Amore, something that happened 30 years ago. Nowadays, 30 minutes will certainly be enough to do this route. Not a big difference hahaha.
The island has been considered by “World Travel Awards” the best island destination in the world for 7 years in a row, and as we like to be the best in everything, Madeira Island is the birthplace and hometown of the best football player of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo (its forbidden to say the opposite).
There are many more stories to tell about this wonderful island, but we leave this discovery to you. There is always something beyond what our eyes can see. Let yourself be carried away by it. Take the opportunity to experience all of it with us, at Villa Amore Accommodation!
