One of the best local festivals in Madeira Island: Festa da Lapa

Summer on Madeira Island is synonymous of ‘arraiais’. That means something like local festivals. All over the Island, these events are characterized by being outdoors. These festivals are mainly focused on bringing the community together and elevating Madeiran culture and gastronomy.

Paúl do Mar is no exception to our local festival takes place on the pier of Paúl do Mar in honor of the most famous mollusk in this place, the limpet.

The ‘Festa da Lapa’ which means Limpet Festival, is dedicated to this famous dish and offers a diverse program, in a typical setting of a Madeiran festival, with food and drink stalls where you can taste the gastronomic culture of Madeira.

This event is organized by the ‘Casa do Povo of Paúl do Mar’ during the weekend in mid-July and this year happened from the 15th to the 17th of this month. This important popular event aims to highlight the cultural heritage of Calheta and this year was its 15th edition.

The limpet is a shellfish that is mostly grilled and seasoned with butter, lemon, garlic and parsley, but it can also be tasted in other ways, such as seafood rice. If you come to Madeira, you will certainly realize that the ‘lapa’ is an icon in the island’s gastronomic culture.

In addition to gastronomy, the festival program is designed to please the entire population, thus becoming a very diverse event. This is a local festival, so you find a lot of local people, emigrants that come back home to be with family and friends, and everyone with a wiliness to socialize and celebrate.
