Coming to the festive days, Christmas arrives a day early in the island. On December 23 there is the well-known market night. On this night, the Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal receives thousands of people. A night where songs alluding to this season are sung and the fun continues into the night with food and drink and a lot of music and dancing.

On Christmas Eve there is the traditional “missa do galo” where most families go to church and many of them spend the rest of the night visiting each other’s houses to celebrate.

During Christmas Day and the days that follow it, it is usual to see the nativity scenes that are made all over the island and that delight everyone.

New Year’s Eve in Madeira brings with it an incredible and breathtaking firework show, which made part of Guinness Books of World Records in 2007. It is the night of the nights and that’s why everyone goes out to celebrate the arrival of the new year. An unmissable event on this island ends the year in the best way.
